About the scholarship system
Scholarships aim to alleviate the burden of tuition and living expenses for students who have difficulty continuing their studies due to financial circumstances, and to help them establish a stable foundation for a fulfilling student life. Scholarship programs include the "New System for Supporting Higher Education," the "Japan Student Services Organization Scholarship," "Local Government Scholarships," and "Various Organization Scholarships." For external scholarships, application information is sent to the university and posted on the university website and on campus bulletin boards as needed, but some local governments and various organizations conduct their own recruitment processes.
Scholarship system and types
New higher education support system (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan Student Services Organization)
This system combines the support of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's "tuition fee reduction" and the provision of "grant-type scholarships" by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO).
There is an upper limit to the amount of tuition fee reductions and exemptions set by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)
There are two types of scholarships: "grant-type" scholarships, which do not require repayment in principle, and "loan-type" scholarships (interest-free/interest-bearing) that do require repayment. Applications are accepted twice a year, in spring (April) and autumn (September). For details on application eligibility and selection criteria, please refer to the Scholarship Information Digest.
Applications for sudden changes in household finances, emergency support, and short-term employment can be made at any time. Please contact the Student Affairs Division, Window 3.
